Producing desired ice faces.

چکیده
The ability to prepare single-crystal faces has become central to developing and testing models for chemistry at interfaces, spectacularly demonstrated by heterogeneous catalysis and nanoscience. This ability has been hampered for hexagonal ice, Ih--a fundamental hydrogen-bonded surface--due to two characteristics of ice: ice does not readily cleave along a crystal lattice plane and properties of ice grown on a substrate can differ significantly from those of neat ice. This work describes laboratory-based methods both to determine the Ih crystal lattice orientation relative to a surface and to use that orientation to prepare any desired face. The work builds on previous results attaining nearly 100% yield of high-quality, single-crystal boules. With these methods, researchers can prepare authentic, single-crystal ice surfaces for numerous studies including uptake measurements, surface reactivity, and catalytic activity of this ubiquitous, fundamental solid.

Study of Yakhchals of Naeen with Analytical Viewpoint based on Elements of Vernacular Architecture
Various climates and geographical variables of iran prompted architectures to design buildings based on principles of vernacular architecture in order to reach the optimal styles which are highly compatible with the climate. In years gone by, Naeen’s hot and arid climate galvanized people into finding an effective way to tackle this adverse climate condition; therefore, a variety of techniques...
متن کاملInhibition activity on alpha-glucosidase of experimental, functional ice cream with the addition of pistachio peel extract
The aim of this study was to produce the ice cream with potential antidiabetic effects by addition of pistachio peel extract (PPE) (0, 10, 20 and 30% on dry matter basis). The properties of produced ice creams such as physicochemical, rheological, antioxidant, antidiabetic and sensory properties were evaluated. The results indicated that ice creams containing 20 and 30% of PPE provided desired ...
متن کاملRoughening transition of prism faces of ice crystals grown from melt under pressure
By observing the crystal shapes and kinetics of ice Ih growing at high pressures from the melt, it was found that the prism f1 0 1̄ 0g faces undergo a roughening transition at approximately 16 C and 160MPa (1600 bar) in H2O ice, and 14 C and 180MPa (1800 bar) in D2O ice. At temperatures above the roughening transition, the prism facets completely vanished and the curves of growth rate versus gro...

متن کاملCorrection for Brumberg et al., Single-crystal Ih ice surfaces unveil connection between macroscopic and molecular structure.
Physics and chemistry of ice surfaces are not only of fundamental interest but also have important impacts on biological and environmental processes. As ice surfaces-particularly the two prism faces-come under greater scrutiny, it is increasingly important to connect the macroscopic faces with the molecular-level structure. The microscopic structure of the ubiquitous ice Ih crystal is well-know...
